Live Scan Rejections: Top 10 Reasons & How to Avoid Them

Fingerprint rejections delay your background check and can cost you the job. Here are the 10 most common reasons Live Scan prints get rejected — and exactly what to do about each one.

Why Rejections Happen (Even With Live Scan)

Live Scan has a rejection rate under 2% — vastly better than ink cards (~30%). But rejections still happen, and when they do, they delay your licensing, job offer, or visa application. Most rejections are preventable with the right preparation and an experienced technician. Here are the top 10 reasons and how to avoid them.

1. Wrong ORI Number

The most common and most costly mistake. An incorrect ORI routes your prints to the wrong agency — or nowhere — and the submission fails entirely. Prevention: Confirm your ORI with your employer, licensing board, or via our Agency Finder before your appointment. Never guess.

2. Poor Ridge Detail / Worn Fingerprints

Frequent hand washing, manual labor, certain medications, and aging can wear down fingerprint ridges. Prevention: Moisturize your hands for 2–3 days before your appointment, avoid harsh soaps or sanitizers right before the session, and tell your technician if you know your prints are faint — they have techniques to improve capture.

3. Dry or Cracked Skin

Dry skin creates fine cracks in fingerprint ridges that confuse the scanner. Prevention: Apply lotion generously for 2–3 days before your appointment. Avoid alcohol-based hand sanitizers immediately before fingerprinting.

4. Excessive Moisture or Sweat

Sweaty fingers smear on the glass scanner, reducing detail. Prevention: Arrive a few minutes early to cool down if it's hot. Wipe your hands thoroughly before the capture. Your technician can use a desiccant wipe if needed.

5. Scars, Cuts, or Injuries on Fingers

Cuts, burns, or scars disrupting fingerprint ridges can trigger a quality rejection. Prevention: If possible, postpone your appointment until injuries heal. If you can't, the technician can note the injury and attempt capture on the best remaining fingers.

6. Incorrect Personal Information

Mismatched names (maiden vs. married, middle names, suffixes), wrong DOB, or transposed SSN digits cause the system to reject a submission. Prevention: Bring your ID and have the technician verify the exact name and details against it before submitting.

7. Wrong Service Type Selected

Some agencies require Level 1, others Level 2. Selecting the wrong service type sends incomplete results. Prevention: Confirm with your employer or licensing board which level of screening they require, and tell your technician.

8. Finger Placement Errors

Placing fingers at the wrong angle, rolling incorrectly, or lifting during capture. Prevention: An experienced technician matters. At Provn, our technicians are trained in FBI-compliant capture techniques and guide you through every finger placement.

9. Scanner or Equipment Issues

Dirty scanner glass, outdated equipment, or uncalibrated machines produce poor quality images. Prevention: Choose a provider with modern, well-maintained equipment. Our Live Scan stations are cleaned between every client and calibrated weekly.

10. Incomplete Finger Set

Missing fingers — from amputation, injury, or birth — require special notation and alternative capture methods. Prevention: Tell your technician about any missing or deformed fingers. The system allows for 'amputated' notation on individual fingers.

What to Do If Your Prints Get Rejected

At Provn, we back every submission with a 100% acceptance guarantee. If your prints are rejected for any reason, we recapture and resubmit at no charge. Bring your TCN (Transaction Control Number) so we can reference the original submission and fix the specific issue.

Most rejection-quality issues are visible on the scanner in real time. If the system rates any print as 'marginal,' a good technician will recapture it until it passes — that's the advantage of Live Scan's instant quality feedback.
