What Is an ORI Number?

ORI stands for Originating Agency Identifier. It's a 9-character alphanumeric code that tells the FDLE and FBI exactly where to send your fingerprint results. Think of it like a routing number for background checks — without the correct ORI, your prints go to the wrong agency, and you have to start over.

Why Your ORI Matters

Every Florida licensing board, employer, and background check requestor has a unique ORI. When you get fingerprinted, the Live Scan operator enters your ORI into the submission system. That ORI routes your prints to the specific agency that needs them. Using the wrong ORI is the #1 cause of rejected or lost fingerprint submissions — and fixing it means paying for and sitting through another appointment.

How to Find Your ORI Number

  1. 01Check your application materials — licensing boards include the ORI in your instructions, welcome packet, or online portal.
  2. 02Ask your employer or HR department — they typically have the correct ORI for your position.
  3. 03Look it up on the licensing board's website — most Florida boards publish their ORI under 'Background Screening' or 'Applicant Information.'
  4. 04Use our Agency Finder tool — search by profession and we'll show you the correct ORI, price, and booking link.
